Today the shells and fossils section went online.
For the sake of clarity, just a brief explanation.

The scope of this section.

The long name for this section is “Shells, fossils, plants and animals”
In the shells, fossils, plants and animals catalog you will find an overview of all vegetable and animal remains on Catawiki.
It is therefore not the intention that pictures of a cow or a doll of an elephant are entered here.

It really must be vegetable or animal remains, or the fossilized remains of animals or plants.
No live animals or plants.
Although of course you are not supposed to import canned soup or leather shoes here, but I hope that this speaks for itself.
Fossil trenches may also be entered in this section, even if they are not really animal remains.

The realm “Fungi (Molds)” is currently not part of this section.
The main reason for this is that it is expected that there is little need for it.
If there is a need for this, you can let us know in this topic.
Then we'll insert it.

The format of this section.

The main classification is by taxonomy.

For practical reasons it was decided to give only the last 7 primary grades + subspecies as a classification option, namely:

1) Rich
2) Strain
3) Class
4) Order
5) Family
6) Gender
7) Kind
8) Subspecies

The ranks “Domain” and “Supergroup” would not add much in terms of classification.
Since we are primarily a catalog, and not a scientific encyclopedia, we have chosen not to include these fields.
The "under" and "super" ranks (Superfamily, Subfamily, etc.) are therefore deliberately ignored.
An exception to this is (for practical reasons) subspecies.
Another factor here is that taxonomy is still in flux, and it is expected that a classification purely on the last 7 primary ranks will cause the fewest problems in terms of adjustments afterwards.

Catawiki is also not suitable for a cladistic classification, because the number of fields and their order is fixed at the entry form, and we also do not want a series of fields that all bear the name “Klade”.

It is also expected that filling in the last 7 primary ranks will be problematic enough for many importers.

For the record. :-)

I assume, partly in view of the lack of the taxon 'subspecies', that the intention is to include each 'species' in the catalog only once? The possible subspecies must then be mentioned in the details of the own specimen?

I also see that is kind of a closed list. Of course it is (until a new species is discovered), but it seems to me to be a bit premature given the very limited options available now.

Kind shouldn't have been closed, no idea why this has happened again now ...
Until recently that was not the case.

There are still other small things that need to be adjusted.
We are going to add subspecies.
Do agree that it still has to be added.

We do tomorrow. (I hope)

Edit May 23, 2012: it has now been changed.
I also updated the first post of this topic (added subspecies)

In itself it doesn't seem like a problem to create multiple items of one type, but there must be a demonstrable difference.

Many species - especially with marine animals (shells, echinoids, crustaceans, etc.) - show a lot of difference in color and shape, which have to do with, for example, the age of the animal or the environment in which it occurs - such as temperature, salinity and mineral composition of the seawater in that area.

I have just become the administrator of the shells and fossils.

It is very important that the name of this category has been changed.

In the meantime, the fossils have already formed their own category, and now all animals are under the heading shell.

A better name would be animals / plants, for example a stuffed fox or frog no longer falls under the category shell, but under animals / plants.

Yes. Everything that lives or has lived belongs to this. Whole or parts of animals and plants. Fossils actually belong here too, but they have their own catalog section in Catawiki. When it comes to minerals and gemstones, I would also include them, but I believe they also have their own section. what you come across in a natural history museum (such as Naturalis), shells, stuffed animals, dried plants, skeletons, or parts thereof, animals in strong water or alcohol, etc., etc. So a great variety of objects. For you, and for anyone else reading this, I would like to point out that it is important to keep a little unity in the input. The title is the Latin name of the organism, in the rest of the entry you indicate what kind of part it is, how it is prepared, etc. For example, the title Vulpes vulpes (fox) can appear several times in the catalog, e.g. as a stuffed animal, as a fur, as a skeleton, as a skull, etc. The title is the one that connects these items. Two different stuffed foxes are then 1 item and everyone can put pictures of his fox in "own copy". If you have any more questions, or if you want to know something about your items, you can always send me an email.
