How can I be sure that an item is not in the catalog? I have received a message a few times that an item that I thought was not in the catalog turned out to be in it. I'm having something like this happening again now.

It happens to everyone. Searching requires some skill, which you can build up gradually. But no matter how skilled, you will always encounter a moment of redness (embarrassment). Of course, it should not become a habit.

When adding stamps it is assumed that you know which country/area.
Please also include the year of issue. Items added without the year of issue will be completely lost in the catalog. Sometimes you see items added with various catalog numbers from paper catalogs, but without the year. I cannot understand nor accept that.

When filtering by country/area and year, you can go over everything. In many countries/areas this is not so much. In Japan or France that can be a lot.

The (nominal / postage) value of a stamp can almost always be read clearly: literally what it says. There is also a handy filter for that.
With those 3 filters you lay the foundation for searching and finding an item.

You can often also filter additionally by theme, for example, but that's where things get a bit tricky. A number of themes are no longer available, so fewer and fewer users find it worthwhile to add themes to items. Users are not crazy either. An unfortunate consequence.
Theme was very useful in searching, but 'Theme' only focuses on theme collectors. No longer as a (handy) tool for searching (and finding). You should therefore not trust the theme as an additional filter.

There are usually additional options depending on the situation. Searching and finding is something you have to learn at LD. Users cannot find an item, while I, for example, find it in less than a minute.
For example, if you know the Michel catalog number, you can also search for it via the search box. If there is a zebra on the stamp, a search using the search box for 'Zebra' may also be successful.

Keep trying. Always search carefully. And if the 'duplication' phenomenon strikes, then so be it. Anyone who adds 100 items and there is a duplication, everyone knows that it is not ill will, ignorance (lack of experience) or laziness.
If you add 10 items in a short period of time and all 10 of them turn out to be duplicates... then everyone has their own opinion. If an administrator notices this, you may be temporarily blocked (temporarily unable to add any more). The latter is always accompanied by guidance and explanation. The temporary blockade ensures that administrators are not unnecessarily overwhelmed. Administrators spend a lot of time and energy detecting duplicates or incorrect data on items added by others. If the guidance is successful, the blockage is quickly removed, giving the user a new opportunity to prove that he (or she) can do it. The rest break in between is intended to make room for the learning process.
Rest assured: almost always (99%) it will work out fine. And often those users then become almost specialists. Practice, practice and practice. Then everything will be fine.

Hi Raoul, you have also pointed out duplications to me a few times. I mainly collect France and strange phenomena sometimes occur there, one of which I have now encountered again. I'll follow your advice and search for theme, maybe I'll find it then. Thank you for your detailed response. Eric (Erebeer)

Well Eric, it remains a matter of a lot of practice and trying. Gain experience.

One of the basic facts in the stamp section is the basic filter system.
Initially it is set to 'Standard'. Then, for example, no FDCs, Sheets, Maximum Cards, Postage Stamps, etc. are shown. This is to make it easy for you if you are just looking for a stamp or block (postage or airmail).
If you want to search everything, you must click on the 'All' button (at the top left) of your selection.

Depending on the situation (what you are looking for), a different path can lead to success (finding) much more effectively (faster).
To search for custom work, for example (the side issue in the stamp section, such as FDC, EDB, EDK, Maximum cards, ...) it is also best to start with the filter 'Standard' (made work is not yet included) and search for a seal on it. Once found, click on the name of the Issue in the detail of that stamp. Then you see everything that goes into that issue (normally anyway): stamps, sheets, blocks, FDCs, Maximum cards, ...).
The advantage of this way of working is that you can also filter by 'Nominal value' first. Which makes searching easier. For manufactured work, Nominal value is not entered, and you cannot therefore search for it. You can do this via the seal(s) on it.

Of course, it is important that items are in the correct Issue. Which sometimes isn't. Too bad.

If you can't find something one way, try another way.

Many roads lead to Rome. The best path is personal, and you have to find it yourself. By... practice, practice and practice.

Hi Raoul, I'm back again, I followed your good advice and worked with the theme and, I didn't expect anything different, that's how I got there. Thanks again, some thoughts about LastDoDo. Eric

EreBeer runs now #10178377 in, Raoul62 . Standing alone #3105205 already in there, which is actually part of a sheet, or something like that?. Do you, Raoul, have an opinion about this?

In any case, # 10178377 is the true Jacob 'se-tenant' . That is the maximum possible representation as a combination , contiguous , of different stamps and/or decorative fields.
It's just a pity that 'Issue' is not filled in. That always makes it more difficult for administrators to do their job. There is still work to be done (but it will be fine once the user discovers the phenomenal benefit of 'Issue').

# 3105205 cannot possibly be 'se-tenant' in the LD stamp section. Not all stamps that are part of it are different, and that is a basic requirement (see manual).
The item may possibly pass through the LD life as a bridge pair. But I still have doubts. There are 2 too many parts hanging on it. And if you strip it off, you return to se-tenant.

In short: the new item is correct , but not yet complete (especially the Issue field). Completion will come. It's a Wikipedia.
In principle, the old item must disappear as a 'combination item'.

The existing item is listed incorrectly. Considering it has been like this for 12 years, and it has already passed through the hands of 5 different administrators...
Naturally, the first administrator (RTBF) to approve it put his colleagues on the wrong track. Then it is assumed that the administrator has checked it (otherwise you do not approve it). The hot water does not have to be reinvented 5 times (the additional changes are assessed and reviewed).
You can think whatever you want about it (raising a Viagra finger or spitting out a complete cesspool), but administrators are only human, with human traits.

The old item is indeed "something like that". Chapter 10.12 clearly states that a se-tenant is different seals. So this is not a separate item.
The second image of the new item is the tab on the left. And do we tolerate/not tolerate that image from the old item as image 3 for information to show that it actually comes from a whole?

Jummeke and Raoul62 could it be that the current rules are shortchanging France collectors? I see two different Y&T numbers 2852A and 2852B.

LD is an independent independent catalogue, which determines for itself (cf. manual) what is or is not included.
Se-tenant, and Seal with tab, are described: what and how we record it.

In Yvert's case the A indicates a stamp with 'vignette' (seal with tab)
In Yvert's case, the B indicates the se-tenant with 'vignette'.
Yvert does not mention whether the 'vignette' (the tab) with 4 stamps attached to it will then receive a 'C' addition. But none of that is relevant to the LD catalogue.
Could be fun to read and may be included in the details as far as I'm concerned. But it certainly does not determine whether or not to admit to LD.

In any case, the latter representation is NOT a Se-tenant. And because of 'combination item' not allowed in the LD catalogue.
It is also not a 'booklet combination'. The escape route is also adequately covered ;)

Raoul62 LD's objective is to support stakeholders as best as possible.

If French collectors structurally collect diptychs with tab and double diptychs with tab, the current rules may not comply.
I would like to have a substantive answer to that question, without having to dig through all of Yvert.

In Yvert's case the A indicates a stamp with 'vignette' (seal with tab)
In Yvert's case, the B indicates the se-tenant with 'vignette'.
Apparently you have a different Yvert than I do.
A: Le diptyque avec vignette
B: La bande de 2 diptyques et 1 vignette

A "diptyque" is a diptych and in my opinion refers to the two stamps connected together that together form a panaroma.

My Yvert does not have a separate entry for what we mean by a seal with a tab.

In short, the current images correspond to the stated Yvert numbers, whereby Type B is indeed not permitted within the current rules.

Indeed, I looked too quickly (I don't like reading). A is the se-tenant according to the LD definition. B is a field part (which is not allowed on LD).

In any case, no paper catalog can be decisive in determining LD's course. Then you sell your soul.
Se-tenant is clearly described in the Manual.

If French collectors structurally collect diptychs with tab and double diptychs with tab, the current rules may not comply.
Are you saying, as Super Administrator of a section, that the section's manual is a scrap of paper without value?
That all those hundreds of se-tenants that do not meet the LD definition have been wrongly rejected over the years?
And what about collectors who collect triptychs on a structural basis... do you put them in the cold or do they also get a warm nest on LD?

There are many users who collect (save) blocks of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, ... (identical stamps) . Many have already tried to fill the LD catalog with those things. They were always banned and removed again.
If collectors collect this on a structural basis, does that mean that we are now more likely to allow them?

Boundaries have been drawn in the past. I've tried to figure out what and why, and I can guarantee that those boundaries are not just haphazardly established. I quickly came to that realization. There was some serious thinking behind it. To put an end to recurring pointless discussions once and for all.
Just like the strongly criticized agreement regarding Blok en Velletje. But that agreement does ensure that it is clear. And it is an agreement that applies to everyone. Even if you have to step on someone's toes every now and then :)

Sometimes I indeed think that the current rules are too strict, or have often been drawn up from a Dutch angle, which makes it unclear whether the structure is also sufficiently balanced from an international perspective.

This is not to say that there was (or is) no thinking behind the current rules. It is only very difficult, because the considerations at the time are difficult to trace. Without that explanation, discussion will continue to arise.

If collectors collect this on a structural basis, does that mean that we are now more likely to allow them?
In a personal capacity: Why not? The big advantage of an online catalog compared to paper is that we can be less cautious about the number of items. However, in my opinion, the items must be collected structurally and it must be possible to maintain an overview.

It's so Helv , if you #3105205 , because it is in a catalog and there are several collectors, where do you draw the line for the following and other se-tenants and the like? I think it will be a wild west then.

Personally, I have no problem with this. At least then those tolerated from the GDR are also legal.
