NCIS and the modern American series, that's what really disgusts me.

Harry56
You said this once at RIP. Even though I'm not a fan of NCIS, I still find your comment a bit incomprehensible. In America they make a lot of rubbish, but at the same time the best series I have ever seen: for example Seinfeld , Homicide: Life on the Streets , The Wire and more recently: Boardwalk Empire, Warrior and the new Perry Mason series with Matthew Rhys.

If you dismiss all modern American series, you may be selling yourself short.

Tastes differ. Grunting was perhaps too harsh an expression. The recent USA police series that are exciting for many as well as humorous ones are just not my thing. Too much decor, close ips, mediocre dialogues (again in my experience) The 70's 80's USA I actually liked that.

I understand what you're saying. There are a number of recent police series starring beautiful people who speak weak lines. The humorous series is a difficult genre. You either like such a series or you don't. A little fun is not enough.

However, with your comment about recent American series you seem to be implying that series from other countries are so much better and that is not my opinion. In Great Britain they make beautiful historical series, but the police series are usually boring and not very innovative. And although English humor is proverbial, the humorous series often consist of stringing together lame and/or bad jokes.
And do you understand the popularity of the Scandinavian series? Not me.

The 1970s/80s produced quite a few iconic series, for example Columbo, Kojak and All in the Family. There were of course far fewer nets, so that a very large part of the Netherlands watched them,
In the morning you could talk about it at the coffee cart (the coffee machine did not yet exist or was hardly used because of bad coffee). The series was part of our culture at the time.
Watching such series in their entirety is not recommended. What was fun back then is often no longer fun.

Nowadays there are many more viewing options. What I love is that I am never bothered by football matches anymore. The disadvantage may be that we all have our own watch list, so we have fewer things in common. Do we actually still have a common culture?

Just like with books/authors, I can only name a relatively limited number of series that I think are great.
Feature films that I really like can only be counted on one hand, in 2 hours it is hardly possible to portray characters well and humanly. Indeed, not all Scandinavian or British or French series can be called good, the opposite is true. And of course, series have been made in all countries that we rarely or never see.

When I get some time, I will mention some series via the LD cafe that I have watched on repeat. That's also a thing, a good series is worth revisiting 2 or 3 times.

Series must be compared with series that were made in the same period. Columbo and Kojak would not attract much of an audience now, but at the time there was little comparable and so we watched them en masse.
Nowadays, excellent series can be seen in all (original) languages via streaming services, including lesser ones, of course.
A tip for those people who happen to have a ViaPlay subscription, check out the series The Swarm . Chilling, internationally made series, after which you look at the sea in a more nuanced way:-)

Series should be compared with series made in the same period.

Collectioneur
That depends on the genre. Monty Python (although a bit slow) and the sitcom Green Acres are still unsurpassed and therefore comparable.

Police and action scenes have become much more dynamic due to improved techniques. In addition, overly explicit scenes of violence used to not be tolerated by (mostly) national broadcasters.

A tip for those people who happen to have a ViaPlay subscription, check out the series The Swarm .

I have an allergy to anything that even slightly leans towards future stories, science fiction and/or fantasy, so I skip it.

My tip is the Warrior series I mentioned earlier, which is strangely not very popular. A series set in San Francisco at the end of the 19th century, with exciting intrigues and great fight scenes, often involving kung fu.
