Hi,

I bought a Tintin (men on the moon from 1954) with a hard cover of which the linen spine has deteriorated, otherwise the book is still quite good for its age (does have some damage but is blank and the book block is still stuck).

My question is it worth making such a book? So to have a new linen backing put on it and what about the valuation after a restoration?

And what is the estimate of the costs of a resto, does anyone have experience with that?

Greetings RiJo

First of all, the question is whether it is the first edition or not. The second edition is also from 1954 and it is worth considerably less. At most, a restored album will receive a good condition rating and the rest must be perfect.

I looked it up here on Catawiki, it is a first edition in any case.

Condition can now be called reasonable.

I paid € 12.50 for it which is not too bad I think. And to be honest, the album remains in its own collection after resto. As said before, does anyone have experience with a good bookbinder?

The album is neither old enough nor valuable enough to undergo an expensive restoration. It certainly won't make your book any more valuable. If you were dealing with an extremely rare specimen, it will be a different story. Just use this copy as reading material and not as a rare collector's item, just a waste of money, but it might be a good experience to see what the restorer makes of it. Have fun collecting

I have requested a quote from a bookbinder, I will wait and see. I think it is a very nice album and it is nice to get such an album back in (reasonably) good condition.

You give exactly the right answer to your own question: What do you think it is worth!

On Wednesday I will go to a bookbinder and have been in contact via email, the replacement of the spine is between € 10 to € 20. To be continued.

I think 12.5 € is definitely a good buy, considering what they ask for it in the shops.

If you get it from reasonable to good condition for 15 €, then you have you get an album in good condition for 27.5 €.

That is far below the price you would pay for an album that you would buy yourself in good condition.

Book is at the bookbinder and he puts a new spine on it for €10.

Furthermore, there is still something wrong with the album, but there are no loose pages, so all in all I have an album in reasonable / good condition for € 22.50.

I don't think it's worth more, it's a first edition from 1954, it's a nice item for the collection :)
