Le 9 mai 1921 une administration civile fit établie pour le pays, suite à la décision de la Société des Nations qui fit de l'île un territoire sous mandat australien. Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Nouvelle-Guinée fut envahie par le Japon en 1942 et de nombreuses troupes japonaises y demeurèrent jusqu'en septembre 1945. En 1946, le Territoire de Nouvelle-Guinée fut déclaré territoire sous tutelle des Nations unies, administrativement dirigé par l'Australie. Le pays devint indépendant en tant que Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée en 1975.

On 9 May 1921 a civil administration was established for the country, following the decision of the League of Nations that made the island an Australian mandate territory. During the Second World War, New Guinea was invaded by Japan in 1942 and many Japanese troops remained there until September 1945. In 1946, the Territory of New Guinea was declared a United Nations Trust Territory administered by Australia. The country became independent as Papua New Guinea in 1975.
