E – The series has 30 items issued from 1867 to 1868.
E – Each time a stamp is used to frank a sending, it is obliterated by a post office clerk. Usually a stamp is obliterated by a specialized tool, but can also be obliterated by hand. The way to reuse stamps already obliterated several people, was to wash them in order to remove the ink. Therefore grilling a postage stamp is a method conceived to prevent this fraudulent reuse. The idea of grilling stamps (an embossed pattern of small indentations) was suggested for the first time by Charles F. Steel, a supervisor of the National Bank Note Company, in 1865. The aim of grilling stamps is to break the stamp’s paper fibre and make it more difficult to wash and to reuse the stamp for a new franking.

Epilogue
The expensive process of applying a security device to stamps, such as grilling, was money down the drain as the problem of re-use of stamps was quite small. Grilling of stamps ceased in 1875.
