De eigenaar van Aztec is John Claudino. Hij startte in 1976 een bedrijf in elektronische onderdelen. Sinds zijn jonge jaren waren treinen zijn hobby. Hij trouwde met een vrouw die grafisch ontwerper was. Dat vormde een ideale combinatie voor een bedrijf dat treinmodellen decoreert. Toen hij in 1986 startte was de keuze in N modellen klein dus ging hij aan de slag met spoor N. Zijn eerste producten werden nog door een ander bedrijf gemaakt, maar spoedig kocht hij de benodigde machines om het hele proces samen met zijn vrouw thuis te kunnen doen. Hij gebruikt Atlas, Con-Cor en in Europa gemaakte wagens om modellen te maken volgens het grote voorbeeld, maar ook met reclame en fantasie motieven, in oplagen van ongeveer 500 stuks. Zijn firma is thans gevestigd in San Mateo in Californië.
