Symbolic or not:

The very last item entered, on Catawiki's last full day before the start of a new era:

Eifel National Park catalog number 8114591

and the first item of a nice collection day, on which the change will take place:

Home Rails Preferred catalog number 8114593

At 8 pm we start the transition to the new site. Unfortunately, this means we will go black for several hours. Tomorrow morning we will be fully at your service again with a new look. So then cozy up to your warm nests, and ...

Haha, great idea Miris!

Then your beautiful avatar can go right in :-)

By the way, we also have to start thinking about an overarching theme register across all sections. Not easy, but it would be nice.

That would be nice René, that, in addition to linking collection areas, you can also call up your entire sub-collection separately but entirely. That would be a huge leap forward!

I strongly doubt that this is feasible. The various headings sometimes have very different needs with regard to the structure of such a register.

I was more positive about it six years ago than I am now. In the meantime, many sections have found their way with regard to the theme fields. But, hey, there might be a tech out there with a great idea. Always open to ideas!

If you have the option to add to a sub-collection in your own collection section (compare 'add to shop') and you can create and maintain your own database with sub-collections, I think you are a long way.

Meta-data can also lift these subsets to the overarching Lastdodo level.

The big problem is who is going to maintain that metadata. Theme register has always been one of my hobbyhorses, but I agree with Arco that the catalog has now reached the point where an overarching theme register is almost impossible to do. Should have been 10 years ago, and then again.

Am a lot more optimistic about the chance to now arrange some other things that I think would make many collectors very happy, signatures and combi-items (this-raft's subset)

Signatures, and more generally signed objects, cannot be found within your collection, cannot be classified or organized. And that is easy to solve with a few extra fields and selection options within the collection.

And as This-Raft indicates, combi-items already exist, but only in the sales department of shops. By expanding that within the collection, everyone can create subsets within their own collection, which also reduces the need for those theme registers.

Also within the catalog combi-items in my entry would be a solution for a lot of collective classification suffering.

@Arco:

I don't think this is so much a technical problem, but an issue that needs to be solved by one or more information professionals.

@Other interested:
A good option for introducing a "theme format" is to allow the existing theme fields to exist as user input. These can then be used as input for a thesaurus (a controlled word system with specific functions).

Terms that are often used in the user input can then be automatically linked to terms from the thesaurus by periodic jobs.

If LastDodo really wants to go well into the future and wants to play a major international role in the collectors and catalog area, then a full operation and all the functionality of a complete thesaurus is a must.

That is, also include the Broader and Narrower terms and make them searchable per term tree (or as a combination of trees).

A good thesaurus is much more than an ordinary controlled glossary, as we use here (and usually elsewhere), because the search options are much more powerful.

I think a thesaurus can be built very well with a No-SQL Graph database, linked to LastDodo. Graph databases are very fast to search entire term trees.

For more information:
About Graph databases
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graph_database
About Thesuarus and controlled vocabulary:
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1057/dam.2010.29

Decisions about the terms in the thesaurus and maintenance can then be made by a committee of experts in the various collection areas.

Building thesaurus is a lot of work, but it almost always pays for itself in the end through more accurate search results (more precision, less failure).
Advice here is always: start very small and expand slowly.

Peter

Addition:

A well-constructed, international thesaurus can also be a good additional revenue model, precisely because it takes so much effort to build up adequately and to get the operation correct. Make our thesaurus available to third parties and ask for money for it.

On paper, quite a few thesauri are already available, such as:

These can be used as a source to get the first start at LastDodo done.

It's also a hell of a job, but a fun one. At least I think. :)

And you are absolutely right. First get rid of everything else so that it works properly again.

Then improve other small things. There are plenty of them too, I think.

A thematic set-up is also a long-term project. That did not happen within a month. It does give a lot of added value.

Peter.

Arco, but adding DODO as a theme to stamps doesn't have to wait for a solution for umbrella theme registers, does it? You put that in there, right?
