Based on the Austin A40 saloon car range, introduced in 1947, this 10cwt van first appeared in 1949 and featured the new 1200cc, OHV engine which formed the basis of all BMC B-series engines following the 1952 merger of Austin and Nuffield Group. Although the shape of the A40 saloon was altered over the years and eventually replaced by the angular Farina styling in 1958, the van shape continued in its original form throughout the production life.
