Hello,

I regularly go to second-hand shops or do flea markets.

I see a nice Nero there every now and then, but I sometimes get there no matter what a 1st edition of it is or what a 2nd, 3rd edition is.

Can someone show me this clearly on the basis of the title list please.
Because the last album is silver tears , thought album 200 or something, but in reality it's only album 153 or something that is on the cover.

Do you have to add 47 albums to every book anyway?

Thank you in advance!

Below I will try to answer your question as clearly as possible without claiming completeness.

Nero was a newspaper strip and all stories first appeared in the newspaper before later appearing in album.

Making an abstraction of the publishing history of the oldest albums, you can distinguish the following periods:

The first 53 stories appeared in album by publisher "Het Volk". These were cheap editions in black and white (or brown and white or something else, but certainly not in color). The numbering of these albums does not correspond at all with the chronological order of publication in the newspaper. These albums appeared between 1953 and 1966 and were often reprinted during that period. In Catawiki you will currently find 324 different editions spread over those 53 albums. See: Het Volk editions - 1st series

Between 1974 and 1987, publisher "Het Volk" reissued these 53 albums. Most received a redesigned cover for this and some received an edition with a third cover. The (new) numbering of these albums again does not correspond at all with the chronological order of publication in the newspaper. Reprints were also made within this series, because at Catawiki you will currently find 123 different editions divided over those 53 albums. See: Het Volk editions - 2nd series

Between 1998 and 2005, Standaard Uitgeverij reissued these 53 albums: still in black and white, on better paper, with the old (recoloured) covers of the 1st series of Het Volk and for the first time in the chronological order of appearance in the newspaper. See for this: The classic adventures of Nero

Marc Sleen's switch from "Het Volk" to "De Standaard" in the mid-1960s was also a legal battle, as a result of which Nero did not appear for a while. Willy Vandersteen and his collaborators then made a Nero parody/homage/pastiche "The history of Sleenovia" for the newspaper. This is the 54th Nero story that only exists in enthusiast edition and is not easy to find today: Sleenovia

"De Standaard" started to renumber the albums released by them from 1 (while it was actually about the 55th story). The first 9 also appeared in black and white (see: Standard editions uncoloured ) but from number 10 it was in color (1968) and would remain so from now on until the end in 2003. A total of 163 albums appeared with "De Standard". The total number of stories came to 53 + 1 + 163 = 217. Somewhere halfway through the albums of "De Standaard" Sleen also started to write down the story number in the announcement strip of each story (e.g. album 146 "The blue brothers" was story 200 , as it is also stated on the festive cover). The numbering of these albums does correspond this time to the chronological order of publication in the newspaper (here and there the chronology of two stories has been switched, but these are exceptions). From album 95 onwards, the format of the albums became larger and the reprints were also issued in this large format. There are currently no less than 395 different editions for the colored "Standard Editions" spread over the 163 albums in Catawiki. See: Standard editions

It is very likely that not all variants and reprints of both the 2 series at "Het Volk" and the colored series at "De Standaard" have been included in Catawiki.

And then there are dozens of special editions, bundles, enthusiast editions... but I'll let you discover them all for yourself on Catawiki.

Ok Theodoor, thanks in advance for your explanation!

Now I just want to say because I try to make a list per year what has been released.

Now I notice at the first series of the people:

No. 11 is published in 1959
No. 12 is released in 1960
No. 13 is released in 1960
No. 14 is released in 1959

Is this all correct or is this a mistake from catawiki / the importer ??

Oh yes, is there somewhere on the net a list printed out every year?
Because all that writing? Eg like on wikipedia, but it is logically not complete.

Greeting

My first explanation was a start to... Now I'm not aware of all the details either. The expenses at "Het Volk" are a chaotic tangle. The only thing you can be sure of is that it concerns a total of 53 albums.

In response to your 2nd question, I took a quick look at the Matla catalog and at some editions in the 1st series of Het Volk on Catawiki.

The albums in this 1st series are arranged in the Matla "according to the moment of publication". After 1965, however, the publisher (within the 1st series) assigned a numbering on the back of the albums that partially deviates from this and is only available on a number of reprinting." This later publisher numbering is also mentioned in the Matla for information. It concerns 17 of the 53 albums. Most of the editions present in Catawiki have the normal numbering of the Matla.

And to top it all off, the unnumbered title lists on the back of these albums sometimes deviate from both the chronological order of Matla and the publisher's renumbering. This is especially the case with very old editions because they often started with the 3 albums that had previously been published by De Gids (The Secret of Matsuoka and The B-Hazard) and Desclée De Brouwer (The Jewels of Gaga-Pan).

Oh yes, there have also been reprints within that 1st series with redrawn covers.

What do you mean by the number 11?

The 11th story = The Black Feet (1st edition = 1959). The 11th album issued in the 1st series of "Het Volk" = The Horn of Plenty (1st edition = 1954) and in the publisher's renumbering (on the back of other reprinted titles after 1965) number 11 is provided for "Beo de Terrible" but it is quite possible that there are no reprints of Beo the Terrible with this back. In any case, there are none in Catawiki.

Standard work in this area "first edition recognition of Nero", is the guide that Yves Kerremans has made about this. Apparently has to add a number of photos, but there is a good description of all Nero's, reprints and first editions and variants. Hard to find.

Nick.

Item 30775 in the Catawiki catalog.

I'm new to this site and my attention was drawn to the above posts from 2013. Very thorough explanation from Theodoor, thank you. Continued seven years later.

With this explanation I am looking at my old Nero editions, all of Het Volk, according to the explanation above from the 1st series. Still two more questions for Theodoor, if he is still on this forum, or anyone who is willing to answer:

  1. How do you decide which year is the album you are holding?
  2. In his description of the 1st series, Theodore refers to the numbering of the albums that does not correspond to the chronological order of publication in the newspaper. Okay, but what numbering is it about?
  • the albums themselves are, as far as I can tell, unnumbered.
  • in the catalog on lastdodo I find a numbering, but I don't understand what it means (chronology of the albums' publication?).

Thank you very much

Hi Seeker's Nest,

I'll try to answer your questions again.

The easiest way to date an album is to enter the title in Lastdodo and search for that album among the results (same front, same back, possibly same inside). I also don't know if really all editions and reprints are present in Lastdodo.

Nick4u also refers to the reference work of Nero expert Yves Kerremans, but apparently this is not so easy to find. Also, I don't own it.

Then the numbering of the 1st series. For that I'm going to do a piece of copy-paste from my last email from above (and adjust it a bit).

The albums in this 1st series are arranged in Hans Matla's comics catalog and are therefore numbered (and I quote literally from that catalogue) "according to the time of publication. After 1965, the publisher (within the 1st series) has written on the back of albums, however, are assigned a numbering that partly deviates from it and that only appears on a number of reprints. " That later publisher numbering is also mentioned in the Matla for information.

An example: Nero's ark. This is chronologically the 16th Nero story (V16) but appeared as the 5th album in the 1st series of Het Volk. In Matla and in Lastdodo the album therefore has number 5. The backs of the Nero albums in this series always contain an unnumbered title list, the composition and order of which changes from album to album. For example, "De ark van Nero" is sometimes listed as the 6th, sometimes as the 7th, sometimes as the 9th,... album. Only the back covers of the few reprinted Nero albums that appeared in this series after 1965 have a numbered title list. In that list "De ark van Nero" has the number 8. But Matla and Lastdodo keep mentioning it as album with number 5.

Learned a lot. Thanks again for the enlightening explanation.

However, I only find 52 titles in the 1st series of Het Volk (Matla- = lastdodo numbering) instead of 53. "The man with the golden head", which occurs in the 2nd series and in the Classic Adventures, is not reflected in the 1st series.

Does this mean it was not released in that series?

(However, I do not have the Matla catalog and do not intend to purchase it).

"The Man with the Golden Head" only counted 31½ pages and did indeed not appear in album form for the first time until 30 years later.

Boekenmagazijn already gave a correct response to this. In my earlier explanation I simply had not thought of that story and I assumed 53 albums in that 1st series of Het Volk. There are indeed only 52 albums (there are also 52 albums in the Matla). In the second series of Het Volk there are 53 albums because "The man with the golden head" is included.
