With this I would like to congratulate Chijanofuji, because he has become the manager of the Coin section, especially for the antique coins!

Nice to have someone on board who has a lot of knowledge of this period. We will probably learn a lot from him through his improvements and additions to the items from this period!

Eric

Thank you Eric!

I will do my best and look forward to the fact that in addition to the coins from my own collection, I can now also play (virtually) with other people's (antique) coins! ;)

Congratulations Chijanofuji!

Definitely a good asset to Catawiki. Nice collection by the way. Really enjoyed the roman coins and you know a lot indeed. I think I have a number of fake Roman coins because I got them for free with an order over the internet. They are barely legible and black with deposits.
Maybe you have a tip for me on how to clean them, so I can see what it is exactly :)

If I have a question about Roman coins, I know who to ask.

Good luck!
Greetings,
Coin33

Thank you for your nice response, Muntje33!

I think I have a number of fake roman coins because I got them for free with an order over the internet. They are barely legible and black from the deposit.

Those don't necessarily have to be forgeries, you know. It may well be that the cheap bronze-copper late Roman coins from the period from Constantine the Great to Honorius and Arcadius (AD 313 to 423) have recently been excavated in Eastern Europe. The lowest quality of those coins can be purchased per bags of 1 to 10 kilos for less than 1 Euro per coin! :)

If you have the option to make a scan or photo of these coins (preferably without cleaning the coins first), then I can take a look at them for you.

The best way to clean newly dug coins is to immerse them in a container (for example, a sealable Tupperware container) with distilled water and let it sit for a very long time. Every time the water is dirty (in the beginning for example 1x per week, later 1x per month) you can change it. You can go a long way with a lot of patience. I know people who have waited 2 or 3 years and have achieved very good results with this method! :)

If they are very dirty, you can safely scrub off the worst dirt with a (not too hard) toothbrush with green soap or washing up liquid. Never use acids or hard metal tools (scalpels, needles, putty knives, you name it) for cleaning unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Greetings,
Jan (Chijanofuji)
