So the rule is that we take over as it is stated on the stamp. Even if the value is not consistently depicted in the same way on the stamps of certain countries, we will take it as it is. Exactly as stated in the help text. Surcharge not mentioned can be mentioned in details such as #357293 . Fill in multiple entries of a value number only once.

And what about UK stamps 2'6 and 1d and 1'3 and 1D??
In my experience, and this has already been mentioned above, nominal value is a search data.
We don't deal with currency, so quarters, dimes, cents, etc. are not included and that is why 1d and 1D are the same, namely 1. I don't know what the notation 2'6 or 1'3 means, but I suspect a decimal point? Therefore 2.6 (2.6) and 1.3 (1.3). Furthermore, you should not invent periods and commas, so it would be 26 and 13. 500 with small or underlined zeros just remains 500 and not 5.00 or 5.00.
Also, don't invent zeros where they are not there and therefore 5,- is equal to 5. (fl. 5,- = 5 guilders, remember?)
Further agree with postmaster .

(my stubborn contribution..)

Leendert ApiSta Punctuation marks can be used (. , ' / -) to represent a nominal and if there is a small number next to a large number for the decimals use period or comma, because we can't show it any other way.

2'6 or 2/6 means 2 shillings and 6 pence. The pound before 1971 was 20 shillings and 1 shilling was 12 pence

Morits, lesson learned again. thank you. Bright too!
user-1713548 , I don't say much else, only the punctuation marks could stay away for me. Certainly not inventing something instead as suggested earlier.
The comma or dot remains a case apart. The 'or' gets in the way here. I regularly see a dot on the stamp but a comma on LD and vice versa. And where the decimal point is implicit and a period or comma may/must be used, you can see that within a series one stamp has a period and the other a comma on LD. Looks good like that.

The 'or' gets in the way here.
In principle there is no 'or', because you fill in what is written on the stamp. If there is a comma before the decimal on the stamp, enter a comma. If there is a dot as a separator on the stamp, you enter a dot on the site. Only if there is no separator on the stamp, you have to choose between comma and point, depending on what is customary on the stamps of that country (in that period). And you encounter incorrect input (for example within a series). The catalog is not yet error-free.

ApiSta I don't know if you are a loyal user with a lot of time. If that is the case then you have already read in various places (both handbook and forum) that you are copying it literally. You may have seen the messages that it contains many errors, that I modify hundreds of them, that for a blank the . or , is used according to the country but we are still missing a country list, etc.

user-1713548, fidelity I don't know, that has to be seen. I know a lot of time, I don't have that otherwise it would be for sale here somewhere.
I have read (and apply) literal copying, but many do not or are visually impaired when it comes to points or commas, and sometimes also numbers. I don't mind reports that there are many errors in it, but I assume that is the case. I don't know if you change many of them, because it is too cumbersome for me to determine (Or I don't know the right method, click on details, click on options, choose history, find out what was changed by whom and when (unfortunately not why) you are about fifteen minutes further, how much time?)).
I think there are also countries that use periods and commas interchangeably, or is my imagination running wild here?

Countries do indeed use everything interchangeably. That is why we say: "whatever is literally on it", sometimes 2 or 2.00 or 2.00 or 2.00. The only doubtful case is 2 00 because spaces are not allowed and you therefore have to enter the country standard here (but is that . or ,).

The Stamps Handbook has been amended in chapter 3 Nominal value.
This concerns an adjustment and clarification regarding when or not the nominal value must be entered.

The past few days I was busy correcting nominal values of Tanzania, among others, but now I receive a message from an administrator who does not agree with my changes.

The handbook does not give specific instructions for non-decimal values, such as Shillings and Pence, only "without coin designation".
In my opinion, in those cases the slash (/ or ´) is not the currency designation, but only the separation between shillings and pence (just as in the decimal system a point or comma separates eg euro and cent).

This is clear with values such as 1/3 (1 shilling and 3 pence) or 1/6 (1 shilling and 6 pence), but Tanzania only knows whole values, behind which /- (or /. or '- or sometimes /=) state.

The relevant administrator thinks that this should not be in the field (only the number), according to my interpretation it should be.

To prevent me from making any more adjustments that will be rejected again (which is a pointless waste of time for both parties), I would like to hear from the experts what exactly the correct notation is.

Highest principle: literally what it says.
With what postmaster clarified in this thread on 11/27/2022:
Punctuation marks may be used (. , ' / -) to represent a nominal and if there is a small number next to a large number for the decimals, use a point or comma, because we cannot display it otherwise.

The format for the example shown is 250/-
For example , #4242839 rightly now says 5'=
I think user-1713548 has already modified hundreds of them?

The problem with a difference of opinion can be that not every user (an administrator is also a user) closely follows the Forum (sometimes said to have a historical cause). You can't see (and remember) everything either.
Users among themselves may also refer to the relevant message on the forum in case of doubt or difference of opinion. Then it will be fine.

Where a difference of opinion can arise, and there is not an immediate ready-made solution: decimals. Large and small numbers, or a number, white space and then back numbers. That is a decimal number. Nominal value is written with a decimal point (NOT with white space). In countries/regions where sometimes a point and sometimes a comma is used as a decimal point ... there you can encounter the 'OR' phenomenon. Only in volatile areas, as far as a number with decimals is concerned. The exception rather than the rule. So the problem should not be overstated. Then you search (nominal value is meant to search) in the worst case in 2 groups. Nothing to do about it.

Boekenmagazijn Read this thread all the way through (all rejected proposals and final instructions from the administrators).
Spaces are never allowed and letters for currencies are never allowed ($ fl. £).
As postmaster wrote on 27/11 and I already gave examples on 02/12, it is literally what it says (. , / '). It only becomes difficult when there is nothing (. or , ???).
Even within a country, this is not applied consistently by postal services.
And for those who no longer understand it all and can no longer follow it: there are still thousands wrong for correction.

What should be entered in the Nominal value field if you cannot find anything about it on the stamp (itself)?
I don't find anything about this in point 3 in the manual.
See recent entry today at Finland.

Assume that 2.30 stands for a certain 'unit'?

Copy exactly what is written.
If there is no value indication, do not enter anything (leave the box empty).
Should be included in the manual. There are still those who make a conversion (or try to decipher a QR code, or indicate the issue value).

The box has nothing to do with the 'value' on the date of issue. It is purely intended to make it easier to find an item (stamp) with the value (if it is stated).

Don't fill in anything, okay.
But that does mean that I cannot search for 'nothing'.
Perhaps provide an option to provide 'no mention/not mentioned' or something like that.
To 'analogy' with other sections where it is usually stated 'not filled in'.
Then those stamps are also together to view when searching.
Only then you know that you do not need to change/adjust the field.
And probably 'postage'...
But postage for what? Without a catalog from Finland I won't know this either. And whether the stamps are for domestic use, or for use abroad in Europe or the Rest of the World.
Because LD does not provide a definitive answer either.

Each stamp of this Series has a value of 2.30 Euro
But this is not stated on the stamp itself, this can only be found on the Internet.
The Series consists of 10 stamps issued as a sheet.
If you look at these imported stamps, they are just catastrophically imported, look at the issue name.
They can easily be adjusted, but I won't start with it.
The sheet.

The stamps in question show a “spot” in the outline of Finland, which probably indicates the “domestic” tariff group. Some stamps of this type have been imported with the nominal value [Finland] .
There also exists a “world” rate, which is indicated by a [globe] symbol.
I don't know whether such a creative solution is acceptable.

stripspeldjes thanks.
That's actually what I wanted to know.
What I can use them for.
Even 20 years later.
If we still stick stamps.
Does Finland only have 1 rate for domestic and 1 rate for abroad?
No 3 rates as we have in Belgium, Europe and the rest of the world?

The Netherlands also has more rates (weight classes) for letter mail, but they all cost a multiple of “1” (or “International 1”, stamps for Europe no longer exist).
There were also stamps with value “2”, but I don't know if they are still sold.
You simply stick 1, 2, 3 or 4 stamps of 1, depending on the weight.

PS I sometimes buy pins in Sweden and know that they do the same there with stamps with the value “brev”.
In Finland, the entire rest of the world will therefore cost a multiple of one basic value.

This is known and passed on a while ago, but this is for a programmer.
Perhaps provide an option to provide 'no mention/not mentioned' or something like that.
You cannot indeed make the difference between 'forgot to fill in' or 'must be left blank', but I don't think that is possible in any section. Every now and then I come across [Unspecified] somewhere. On to Collectioneur whether we want it this way.

Correct, because this is a different type of field than a normal manageable field. It's great that we can filter on this. But indeed we cannot currently filter on "not filled in" under "Nominal value".
