Today a not-so-pleasant email exchange with a buyer of a 1959 Suske en Wiske reprint. Bought in 2014 at a Catawiki auction, with some pages with brown smudges showing neatly on the photos. So now sold with explanation and photo of 1 of the pages concerned. Buyer was hesitant but bought because of the beautiful front and back with a visible slight discolouration of the back. Now the story that the stains would not be the result of reading smudges (which I thought when purchasing), however, mold. The album was held up to the lamp by the buyer via a comic book restorer and has now had the fungus toned down to foxing. The allegations of copper are not nice but I have now swallowed it. Whether you are a criminal.

But good is this foxing? And if so why only on a few pages and the album otherwise beautiful? No traces of moisture. And if it's foxing why doesn't an auctioneer pay attention to something like that, but yes that is already barred. And reading fingers can also be tanned , isn't a finger also moist ?

The amount is already back on the buyer's account and I hope the album will be returned in good order. So I don't have any other photos available right now.

Hello Harry56 I can't say anything about the technical questions (now read the term Foxing for the first time) but had the buyer indicated in advance that he would have the book checked by a restorer, if not, would I being a bit childish in my opinion.

catacrumpie

I have learned that if buyers have doubts about a somewhat expensive comic that I offer myself, they can come and see it. Or don't put such an album up for sale. It just happens that some pages have the same defect as what is in the photo, which the buyer knew. Because the front and back covers are beautiful, except for some discoloration on the spine (I did send a photo of the spine extra), the buyer probably thought that he wouldn't be so annoyed by the issues. And yes "it's MOLD" doesn't come in so nice. But I was quite surprised that the buyer immediately expected me to pay for postage back and forth in addition to the purchase price or I have no right to speak. I thought you would have a consultation with LD first, but that's not how it went. It is 1 incident in all years, but I can't stand forcing and one-sided stories and make it even worse than it is. That's my pitfall. The buyer certainly doesn't think he's childish so I have to let that go. I had set the album to almost new a long time ago and that was already wrong, although the buyer knew that the album was not in almost new condition, but now uses it as an argument.

Yes, I do know foxing because I have sometimes come across it in old books with loose paper. But that looks very different, I'll see if I still have such a book.

Finally, I have indicated that the restorer in question can send me an email, provided it remains decent. And I can always ask Catawiki for an explanation after years. Received 2 reactions this morning: refund of the purchase price including 1 x postage": top followed by reaction to my argument: that he is done with me and will send the album back.  So I am not allowed to communicate with that restorer.

I'm still hoping for an opinion from Foxing connoisseurs at comics...

Maybe put the entire mail exchange here Harry? What you are doing now is again not very neat ;-)

catacrumpie After receiving the booklet, when I suspected that it was mold, I contacted a collector who also carried out restorations performs. I just sent him some pictures (read clear pictures), nothing wrong with that.... He told me it's about foxing. I don't understand what's childish about this?

Knowing Harry a little, I know that he NEVER sends indecent emails, and the post here doesn't use a single bad word, so...

Frans2408 Why should  Harry56 put the entire mail exchange online? (that's private and I think also against the LD rules).. He tells us the events from his side in a nice way and asks us for advice, you can just respond with your side of the story but instead you choose to post a snarky comment, so who isn't neat then....A little more about your question to me... If you have had the book "re-approved" behind the seller's back, I personally think that is childish, then I would have said to the seller "I'll take the book from you but I'll have an expert look at it". Finally.. Harry didn't mention your name anywhere in his post, so afterwards it might be wiser not to respond publicly and to just come to a mutual agreement.

Morits So since you know Harry a little bit, are you 100% sure he never sends an indecent email? Well done! In this case I don't take your messages completely seriously anymore....something with "friends", so to speak, which Harry accuses me of in one of his emails regarding the collector/restorer....

catacrumpie Because he now gives a one-sided view of the emails, that's why! I have not had anything retested, I bought a booklet as "near mint condition", and received a booklet that is at most fair condition, and is full of foxing. I thought it was mold, and show a few pictures to someone with knowledge when it comes to paper.... That you think that's childish, well....do your thing with it....

I'm not going to go on about this at all, I've got my money back, and he's book with foxing, ready.

Frans2408 If you think there is a one-sided view of the mail contact then you should have just told your side of the story (as you kind of do now) and not commented "Maybe post the whole mail contact". speaking of childish, that might (now) also apply to your reactions.

I will respond to your feedback, then that one-sidedness will also be gone.

If the moderators want to delete my texts, especially because the anonymity is gone, I have no problem with that.

Harry56 I just read it, and I have to say, I didn't expect anything other than lies.... You sold it as "near mint condition with some reading smudges", you go and delve into foxing first, that is something completely different from "some reading smudges" And about the booklet that was returned: That the postman doesn't deliver a package within a few hours is certainly also my fault? ;-)

I'll close the discussion with this one. The points of view have been discussed sufficiently.
