Hello everyone,

Sometimes a pocket watch says Cylinder Remontoir.

Cylinder would then indicate a cylinder clock. , and Remontoir means it would be a mechanical timepiece.

Is there a difference in definition between a cylinder timepiece and a mechanical timepiece.

If so, where does the engraving save: Remontoir cylinder 8 rubis.

(Rubis I already know what it means). All other information is welcome.

Hard to explain. With a cylinder escapement, the gangwheel (part of the escapement) stops momentarily with every movement.

Mechanically, every timepiece is something by means of. a spring (on a clock with weights) is driven. This is in contrast to a quartz watch that runs on battery.

Then Remontair. This is a French name for a system of a winding and adjusting mechanism combined in one crown.

8 rubis means that the movement is bearing 8 rubies (the bearing stones)

So if you combine this you know the meaning of: Remontoir cylinder 8 rubis
