Gwalior was the largest princely state in central India. It already had an efficient internal postal system when, in 1885, a postal convention was signed with the British Indian Post.
Consequently, from then stamps of British India came in use, which were overprinted with the state name Gwalior. The overprinting was done at the Government Printing Press in Calcutta till 1926. Thereafter the overprinting was done by the Security Press in Nasik. After the independence of India, Gwalior became part of the state Madyua Pradesh and as such regular issues of India are now in use.
